マーラーの交響曲のCDは数多聞いていますが、何度も聞きたくなる演奏ナンバーワンはジンマンです。 こってりと情念に濡れた主情的な演奏とは対極の、あっさりさっぱりとした蒸留水のような済んだ演奏です。

指揮、オーケストラ、合唱、録音全て最高の素晴らしさ。 これまでクレンペラー、ワルター、バルビローリが最高水準と思っていたが、今までマーラーの解釈を楽しんで来た訳で、このチクルスによってマーラー自体を堪能できた喜びは筆舌に尽くせない。 ジンマンの指揮の自然さ、トーンハレ管弦楽団の技量の高さ、合唱の適度な遠近感、まさにそこにオーケストラがあるが如き立体的録音。 録音にかけては今までシャイー 、コンセルトヘボウ盤が最良と認識していたが、桁外れの素晴らしさ。 マーラーの真の美しさを堪能できる名盤に感謝。

個別に聴いた時には多少の不満を感じましたが、全集として集中的に聴いてみると出来栄えのアベレージの高さに感服いたしました。しっかり手綱を引き締めてゆくジンマンさんの指揮、確かな腕前でそれに応えるオーケストラ。ミクロからマクロまで細心の注意できちんと再現されてゆく、基本はスリム＆クールの姿勢です。但し、知・情・意の「情」がやはりもう少し欲しいというのが個人的な希望であります。曲想が表わす気分、それがうまく出ないと「感動」には結びつかないのだなあ。文句なしの名演は第１番・第４番・第８番。秀演は第２番・第６番。問題ありは第３番・第７番。第１０番はカーペンター版の使用という大失策により、問題外。カーペンター版は聴こえる音がマーラーの響きではない。ジンマンさんはどうしてこの版を選んだのでしょうか？理解に苦しみます。さて、この全集の特徴は最優秀の録音。左右への拡がりと前後の奥行きが見事に再現され、楽器の音色やバランスも完璧に聴き取れる究極の録音であります。といふことで、「最高」の域には達していないかもしれませんが、メリットの多い、優れた全集でしょう。
