Live At The Atlanta International Pop Festival July 3 & 5 1970

70年の米国独立記念日を中心にした3日間の野外フェスの録音。ベトナムで交戦中の米国で、反戦派、国防派それぞれの議論が渦巻くアトランタ。おそらくは会場に集まった若者たちにとって単なる野外フェスという以上に、同世代の不安感、不満などの空気を共有する意味があったのかと想像します。とりわけ暑い南部の大豆畑で、フェスのオープニングとトリをつとめたのがオールマン・ブラザーズ・バンド。BBキングやジミ・ヘンドリックスも名を連ねている参加ミュージシャンの中で、彼らはまだアルバムを一枚か二枚発表しただけの新進グループという位置であったはずです。2枚目のディスクの演奏は7月5日と記載されておりますが、ほとんど6日の明け方近くだったと聞きます。わたしは「フィルモア・イースト」やニューヨークのスタジオ・ライブもよく聴きます。2作の収録は71年。このライブは野外であること、地元であることが何よりも特徴なのかなと思います。時間の制限もあるようでない。聴衆が喜んでいるなら好きなだけジャムを続けることができたはずで、その伸び伸び具合が心地よい。象徴がDisc2の「Mountain Jam」の開放的な演奏です。彼らの、明るいのか暗いのか、乾いているのか湿っているのか判然としない、しかし骨太な音を聴いていると、時代の空気まで伝ってくる気持ちがします。

ファーストアルバムの1曲目から始まってしまう、オールマン・ブラザーズ・バンドにとって原点を踏まえなおそう、という意図がくみ取れるライブです。2000年のニューヨーク公演で、ほぼ半月もロングランし続けた中からの編集。彼らにとって、ここでリセットしなければならなかった理由は、ウォーレン・ヘインズ、アレン・ウッディー在籍期の第二次黄金期が終わった区切りにあたるからです。代わって参加するのがデレク・トラックス。彼は、ここでの大舞台に気負ったり、気押されたりすることなくさりげなく登場してきます。でも、一聴で彼のギターとわかるもので、その個性たるや恐るべしです。彼らのライブの中でも最もゆったりした印象を与えます。長いジャム曲は少なめ。ところが最後に「High Falls」がやってきます。ディッキー・ベッツ作で「Win, Lose or Draw」というあまり華のない時期の作品収録ゆえ、わたしはこの曲を知りませんでした。たんたんとしたアンサンブルが、徐々に各パートのソロ応酬になっていくジャム曲で27分あります。（この曲のベースがアレン・ウッディーだったらな…と思わないでもありません。）ここでのトラックスの演奏は、すでに堂々としたものです。彼らのライブはダブルCDであることが多く、ついつい勘違いしてしまうのが作品のヴォリューム。シングルCDでも70分以上の演奏で、満腹感は保証いたします。
