This recording captures one of the most famous performances of this work, and certainly the most famous performance during the second half of the twentieth century. On 31 December 1960, Herbert von Karajan assembled a matchless ensemble for a new production of Strauss's operetta at the Vienna Staatsoper, which had re-opened only a few years earlier. A young Eberhard Wachter summons his rich baritone voice and aristocratic airs to paint a most memorable portrait of Eisenstein. Rita Streich, the "German Nightingale" of the 1950s, gives a splendid turn as Adele, especially in the thoroughly convincing chuckles of her "laughing song" ("Mein Herr Marquis").
In a recording with so many delightful moments, it is difficult to isolate which ones are the "best." Without question, that evening's Viennese audience responded most audibly to the performances at Prince Orlofsky's party: Erich Kunz's alternately gentle and lively, but always affecting, rendition of "Ich fuhr' zwei harbe Rappen" and the big surprise, Giuseppe di Stefano--then at the height of his vocal powers--assuming the role of the "Italian tenor" and giving enchanting renditions of "O sole mio" and Franz Lehar's "Dein ist mein ganzes Herz."

1960年大みそかのライヴ。音は特別よくはありません。開始早々、いかにも古めかしい、乾いた音にちょっとがっかりします。また歌手の立ち位置により聴きづらくなる個所もあり、拍手が演奏をマスクしてしまう個所もあり、といふことで音の状態にはあまり期待しない方がいいです。とはいえ、大編成の後期ロマン派の曲というわけでもなし、そこそこの音で十分に楽しめますし、実際聴き始めるとすぐに慣れて全く気になりません。演奏はいかにも愉しい気分に満ちた「娯楽」テイストの横溢するもので、これぞ劇場における花型娯楽という趣きです。お客様の反応それ自体も演奏を盛りたてて行く小道具のようなもので、演奏者とお客の一体となった本場ならではのありようでしょうなあ。極東に住みそれを音だけでたどる我々はまさに「傍観者」にして、こういう愉悦には入り込めない疎外感も持ってしまいますね。ま、そういう雰囲気を味わいつつ聴きましょう。オペレッタ「こうもり」の名演ディスクという位置づけはしないでおきます。もっと技巧的に優れた歌や、甘さや輝きに満ちた歌、さらには特徴的・個性的な歌（たとえばコヴァルスキー！）も我々は聴きましたね。それに比べてこれは、往時の劇場の定番メニューの枠を出るものではありません。立派でそれなりに楽しいけど、そういふところです。なお、第２幕終わりには、ジュゼッペ・ディ・ステファーノが登場して２曲歌って大喝采を得ています。彼もこの頃はもう往年の輝きを失っていますが、さすがはスター。当日は大盛り上がりだったでしょうな。

カラヤンはこうもりをこの盤を含め、3回も録音していて、3回目にあたるこの盤は1960年の大晦日にウィーンでライヴ録音された物。カラヤンのオペレッタのライヴ録音というのは非常に珍しいのではないだろうか。大晦日という事もあるのかオーケストラや歌手、観客までもがノリノリなのが良くわかる。また第二幕の後にはバレエとガラパフォーマンス入り。ライナーにORFの名前がクレジットされているので元々、放送録音用の音源なのかも知れない。ただし、音質はお世辞にも良いとは言えないレベルでどこか曇った感じのする録音。

モノラルではあるが、有名なDECCA盤より演奏に生気があり、カラヤンもオケも”ノッ”ているのがよくわかる。またDECCAのステレオ録音盤はヒスなどのノイズが多いので、こちらの方が聴きやすい。という事で、総じてこちらの方が良いレコードだと言えよう。
