カリフォルニア３部作の２作目の本作。疾走感のある定番曲by the wayから始まるこのアルバムはとにかくドライブによく合う。真昼間ではなく夕方もしくは明け方に車を運転しながら聞きたい１枚。レッチリの中では一番ポップで聴きやすい。

例えるならホロ苦い珈琲みたいなアルバム。今まではジンジャエールの爽快感だった。どちらがいいとかじゃなくて。まぁ結果的にはこのアルバムが一番売れたし、メロディアスな曲も多いから悪くはない。

１曲目がライブでのド定番「BY THE WAY」からのスタート。改めてジョン・フルシアンテの偉大さと言うかレッチリとの相性の良さを見せ付けた作品。メロディアスにアンソニーが歌い上げ、その裏でファンキーでグルーヴィーなフリーとチャドのプレイに、ジョンのギターの最強のアンサンブル
