’81年発表。前作発表後、脱退してしまったジャー・ウォーブル。しかし、PILはベーシスト不在という異常状態のまま新作の制作に突入する。が、結果的にはこれが功奏、レゲエやダブ、ディスコ、さらにクラウト・ロックといた『Metal Box』で展開したサウンド要素をすべて手放さざるを得ず、ロックのビートというくびきからも逃れることが可能になったのだ。中近東だがアジアだかわからない妖しいエキゾティシズム、トライバルに鳴らされるリズムなどが空間に解き放たれ、ジョン・ライドンの悲痛な歌声が切りさくように響き渡る。ピストルズを脱退し、みずからパンクに死亡宣告を突きつけたライドンの孤高の精神がヒリヒリと迫ってくる。

このアルバムは音もさることながら、ジャケットが最高！！ アルバムタイトルも最高にいい。 個人的に今でも聴く曲は「banging the door」 当然、flowers of romance、Under the houseも。ライブ音源より このアルバムのものが断然いい。 これもおじさんは聴き狂ってました。

凄い、ｺﾚ。硬質かつ重厚なﾄﾞﾗﾑの上に、毒に冒された読経のようなｳﾞｫｰｶﾙが乗る①曲目からして、あまりに衝撃的。ぬけらんね。
