最初はあのU2が…！？と驚いてしまうが、冷静に考えるといつものU2だった。というのがファン的には理想的なあれだったなと　　　　 アクトンの「急激な路線変更に見えて実はそんなに変わってなかった」ってファン的には一番有難い感じですよね　　　　 あんまりずっと金太郎飴でもちょっと飽きるし、毛色は変えてほしいけど、あんまり別物になっちゃうと困るし、変えるのは毛先だけで十分ですというようなファンの我儘な期待に応える1枚　　 とりあえずエッジ的には効果音みたいな不思議なスライドギターが何かと使われているのでそれが魂の叫びでの「勉強」の成果だったのかなと思いました　　 ここで試したことが2000年以降も生かされてるように思います

こういうデジタルロック系の音作りって当時のはやりだったからU2もその部分を意識したところは多分にあったんだろうと思う。そういった流行ものに手を出すと作品として風化するのも早いし、その意味で本人達にとってもこのアルバムはひとつの「賭け」だったんだろうけど、その試みは見事に成功してます。なにせ全く古くなりませんから。やっぱりしっかりした曲が書けることと、デジタルというスタイルだけを批評精神もなく取り入れてしまうのではない彼らの屈折したポップ感がこのアルバムのある種の凄みにつながっているんだろうと思う。BONOが扮した”The Fly”等、どこかミステリアスで曖昧なイメージ作りをプロモーションやツアー含め徹底したところも大きな成功要因のひとつ。
