Product Description

All profits from the sale of this recording will be donated to The Garland Appeal, a charity devoted to raising funds for cancer research.
This recording is one of a rare breed, it's a tribute to a humanitarian that also makes a moving musical statement. Linda McCartney died from breast cancer in 1998, this recording presents choral music by English composers commemorating her life.
The concept for the recording was inspired by a 1953 musical tribute to Queen Elizabeth II. Ten English composers each contributed a composition in the Queen's honor. This program, featuring ten composers as well, opens with Ralph Vaughan Williams's "Silence and Music," whose elegiac tone is well-suited to the tribute to McCartney. The balance of the program features music by contemporary English composers. Most impressive is John Tavener's "Prayer for the Healing of the Sick." Tavener's composition is based on a liturgical prayer from the Eastern Orthodox church and is haunting in its simplicity. Sir Paul McCartney's "Nova" is an uplifting hymn that features all of the ex-Beatle's melodic gifts. The Joyful Company of Singers conducted by Peter Broadbent, sing with eloquence and crystal clear articulation. The proceeds from the sale of this recording go to cancer research, yet another reason to acquire it at once.
REVIEWS:
New York Times (Publisher) (6/8/00, p.E5) - "...Sir Paul's 'Nova'...is a dialogue with God, starting with the plaintive questions 'Are you there?' and 'Are you hiding?'....Mr. Rutter's 'Musica Dei donum' is a smooth-flowing celebration of music as a gift of God..."
