Singer-songwriter and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Graham Nash first rose to fame with British Invasion hitmakers the Hollies. He went on to co-found the legendary rock supergroups Crosby, Stills & Nash and CSN&Y, and remains active with both configurations. Throughout it all, Nash has also pursued an acclaimed solo career, beginning with this 1971 gem SONGS FOR BEGINNERS.

CSN＆Yのメンバーであったグラハム・ナッシュのファースト・ソロ・アルバムです。いわゆるカントリー・ロックに位置づけられるグループに、英国人であるグラハム・ナッシュがいたのは面白いことです。彼の作る曲はポップなものが多く、「Teach Your Children」「Our House」などは、CSN＆Yのレパートリー中では、今でもテレビやCMで耳にする曲です。このソロ・アルバムもCSN＆Yのメンバーのソロ作の中では最もポップな作品であり、さらにグループでの時よりも、イギリス的な香りを感じさせるような気もします。「Military Madness」「Chicago」といったシングル曲や、隠れた名曲とされる「Simple Man」などは、とても彼らしさがでた曲ですが、「Better Days」「I Used to Be a King」「There’s Only One」などホーン・セクションや女性コーラスによる厚みのある音作りに新鮮さを感じます。

ライナーノーツにある通りとてもゴージャスなメンバーで収録された1stアルバム。ただ、①の主張より⑥の私小説に持ち味があります。カメラマンでもあるNash自身が撮影したアルバム写真は、お花畑と思いきやお墓だそうです。

Nashのメロディメイカーとしての側面が伺える好アルバムです。シングルカットされた１０，１の他に、３，５，６，９において、彼独特の暖かく美しいメロディを聞くことができます。Box Setでは、シンプルなアレンジで、７のライブバージョンを楽しめます。
