キャラバンサライをより深化させた、故にコマーシャルシーンではウケなかったのだろうが、ここが絶頂期である。 もちろん1st、アブラクサス、3rdと突っ走ったアルバムもいいが持てる音楽性をフルに絞りきったこのアルバムがある意味頂点と言える。 少し飛んでの傑作「ムーンフラワー」と表裏一体の作品

良いアルバムです。ラテン色が薄くなろうが、ブラコンっぽいヴォーカルが入ろうが、フュージョン色が伺えようが、サンタナでしか作れない音が詰まっています。1作目から3作目まででラテン・ロックを極め、4作目で宇宙のリズムに辿り着き、前作ウェルカムから6作目である本作で前人未到の世界を築き上げたと云えば大袈裟かも知れませんが、それほどこの時期のサンタナは凄いの一言。ロックの奥深さを実感させる一枚。

カルロスの涼やかで、清冽なギタートーンが印象的な一枚です。 ジャズ、フュージョンで括ってしまい、サンタナのサウンド史の過渡期のアルバムと片づけてしまうには、あまりに惜しい好盤です。評論家筋には好評を得ていないアルバムですが、彼らは、濃厚で濃醇、豊潤だった2枚目、3枚目の世界やラテンロックという狭義な世界観に拘泥してしまってはいませんか？そんな狭い視野でいると、雑食たるカルロス・サンタナの音楽的魅力を見過ごすし、スポイルしてしまいます。真夏の熱くて直裁な日光のもと、あるいは真冬の深々たる寒さの中で本作を聴けば、カルロスが奏でるハイトーンで奥行きの広い、これまでの彼の作品にないディストーションサウンドの妙味が理解できるでしょう。 ヴォーカルのレオン・パティロの表現力も、サンタナ歴代ヴォーカリストの中で出色です。ジェフ・ベックが、一時、彼をメンバーに迎えようとしていたというエピソードにもうなずけます。
