The leading artist of UK's Two Tone label the Specials began in the late 70's, and is often described as the pioneer of two-tone ska. The band consists of black and white guys from Coventry, who initially named themselves as Coventry Automatics.
The band won popularity by combining punk with Jamaican SKA which was fairly popular in the late 60's in the UK. They made their debut with "Gangster" and output two albums: "Specials" and "More Specials". They ironically split up after releasing their UK No.1 single "Ghost Town".

This is not the first Specials collection to hit the CD racks, and it may not be the last--but a cursory glance at the tracklisting, as well as the added DVD, make this an attractive package. It’s a little surprising not to see their cover of Monkey Man, but for sheer value you can’t go wrong with the rest of what’s on here. Their unique take on ska and a foray into what sort of resembled lounge were such refreshing, bold moves for the time. Great stuff!
