From director Sam Raimi came the event movie of 2002, Spider-Man, starring Toby Maguire as Peter Parker, an average student who suddenly finds himself with the powers of a spider. Whilst on a student visit to a science lab Peter accidentally gets bitten by a genetically modified spider, thinking nothing of it at first he suddenly begins to go through strange changes, he gets stronger, faster and can climb walls, spin webs and even sense danger before it happens. At first he uses his new powers for his own gain, but after a tragic event he decides that they should be used for the greater good and sets about creating his alter ego, Spider-Man. Though his newly found gifts don't seem to be any help with his greatest problem, his love for girl next door, Mary Jane (Kirsten Dunst) who only sees him as a friend and is more interested in trying to make it in the big city as an actor.

Just as Peter is beginning to get the hang of being Spider-Man a villain of equal power emerges, The Green Goblin(Willem Defoe). Determined to bring chaos and disorder to the city the Goblin must be stopped at any costs, though when he discovers Spider-Mans weakness for Mary Jane things begin to get really difficult for Peter.

(Kirsten Dunst) becomes even stronger as he fights the impulse to reveal his secret life and declare his love. His friendship with Harry Osborn (James Franco) is complicated by the young Osborn's bitterness over his father's death and his growing vendetta against Spider-Man. Even Peter's beloved Aunt May (Rosemary Harris), who has fallen on hard times after the death of Uncle Ben, begins to have doubts about her nephew.
