We're plunged straight into London, 2027, women have become infertile and civilisation is breaking down. Theodore (Clive Owen), a former political activist, finds himself reluctant guardian to a miraculously pregnant women, but with the future of humanity in his hands who can he really trust, and where can they go?

Alfonso's timely film uses societies breakdown as just the stepping off point to address a series of questions, from pollution, to terrorism, to the rising police state and to just what finally does happen to Battersea Power Station?

Several long sequences are shot in one long take, the highlight being an extended action sequence towards the finale, where we follow Theodore on a seemingly never ending race through a rioting prison camp, it's an audacious scene and one that holds you transfixed as untold carnage unfolds in front of you.

Owen is perfectly cast as the reluctant everyman thrown into the middle of events, but it's Michael Caine who steals the film as an old time hippy who seems more alive than anyone around him.

Alfonso has crafted a masterful film, capturing the feeling, look and character of London and England perfectly, while also making a thought provoking and enjoyable tale, one that's a timely reminder of just how fragile humanity can be.
