なんだかんだでストーンズはこれ。土着的な、スカッとヌメっているというか、ストーンズは表現が難しいのですが、その伝えづらいストーンズらしさが一番溢れているアルバムだと思います。名盤は軒並み最初と最後の曲が名曲ですが、その代表的な作品！必聴！

天才「Lewis Brian Hopkins Jones」最期のスライド・ギターが「No Expectations」で聴けるとかで、当時はそればかり聴いてたな…。Jimmy Millerのproduceが功を奏したのか、鬼気迫るbandplayによって実に骨太でearthyなbluesrockが実現された！また、本作に纏わる数々のepisode〜Brianの落伍から怪死までのStory、Brianと「John Winston Ono Lennon」「James Marshall Hendrix」３人によるSupergroup構想の話題、アルバムジャケットのデザイン問題、いくつかの聖書的な歌詞、『One Plus One』の映像等〜も作品に大きな力を与えたことは否めまい。「Jumpin’ Jack Flash」を入れなかった計算も間違えではなかったようだ…。

表現の巧さは「メインストリート」あたりまで進化していきますが、発火点はこれであり、こうしたアーシーな方向性に向かう必然性は他の追随を許さないものと感じます。もっとも、ここで反応してしまったら、前後すべてを聴くことになる、罪なアルバムでしょうか。ともかくストーンズ史上、最も突出した作品であることは疑う余地がないんじゃないでしょうか。歴史的にも音楽的にも重要なアルバムと考えます。
