クーデターによって事実上祖国が消滅。パスポートが無効になってしまった東ヨーロッパのクラコウジア人、ビクター・ナボルスキーは、空港でアメリカへの門戸を閉ざされてしまう。やがて彼は、いつまで続くか分からない“滞在期間”中、どこの国にも属さない人間として、空港ターミナル内だけでの生活を始める。アメリカなのにアメリカではなく、しかし最もアメリカ的な場所で、食事をして、仕事をして、友人を作り、恋の花まで咲かせ、ビクターは“何か”を待ち続けているのだった…。

いったいどうなるの？っと思いながら見ましたが、良かったです。トム・ハンクスならではの演技に引き込まれたということもありますが、いろいろな人の温かさというものを感じながら、ほっとする作品です。

国が消滅したことで空港に足止めされた男の悲劇を扱わっているが、彼の強さや周囲の温かさが狭い場所で強いられる生活を賑やかにしていく様は、まるで喜劇のよう。言葉を学び、仕事を得て、儚い恋心を抱くなど実に多くの出来事が連なる中、彼が米国入国にこだわる理由が明らかになると胸が熱くなる。 ロケではなく、セットを組んだ空港の様子は、さすがハリウッドとしか言いようがない。
