50年代半ばから「Drum Suite」や「The Jazz Greats of Our Time」など、ビッグバンドの傑作を次々と放った名アレンジャーのマニー・アルバムがデューク・エリントンの楽曲をテーマとした1958年の傑作、「Sophisticated Lady (The Songs Of Duke Ellington)」(Coral CRL57231)の復刻です。単なるビッグ・バンドではなく、幻想的なスキャットを中心とした混声コーラスがフィーチャーされ、クラブ系のファンにもアピールする内容です。参加メンバーも豪華で、アル・コーン、ボブ・ブルックマイヤー、アーニー・ロイヤル、ハンク・ジョーンズらのソロも聴かれます。ジャケットのデザインも最高。初心者からマニアまで幅広く楽しめる作品です。録音は1958年3月。（Jazz Yellより)
