1960年代末期に米国から帰国した佐藤允彦をはじめ、日本組の富樫ら、戦後最高の人材が次々と頭角を現すタ1970年代初頭の日本ジャズは世界最高のレベルを形成。ヨーロッパ・フリーとも異なる独自の展開を見せた。そうした中、新宿「ニュージャズ・ホール」などを含めて、優れて先鋭的な音楽を様々な場所で展開したのが、本作に参加した面々だ。35年以上の年月は、この時期のJ-Jazzの真のクリエイティビティを浮き上がらせてきた。
