1964年−−−ミシシッピー州の小さな町で３人の公民権運動家が突然、姿を消した。事件を重要視した連邦政府は、元郡保安官で叩き上げのアンダーソンとハーバード大卒の若きエリート、ウォードの２名のFBI捜査官を派遣する。徹底した人種差別のはびこる南部の町で、住民達の冷笑をよそに大捜査網を敷くウォードと、南部の事情を熟知した老獪に捜査を続けるアンダーソン。すべてに対照的なふたりは、捜査過程で対立しながらも、失踪した３人の行方を追って、敵意にみちた街を行く。
