Brad Mehldau氏は、△△派とか■■系とか従来のイディオムに分類されるのを嫌い、唯一無二の音楽世界を切り開き、そこをひたむきに突き進んで、ついにはMehldau流と呼ぶしかないような音楽的な高みに到達された方だと思います。本作は、久々にトリオのフォーマットで、全て自身のオリジナル曲を聴かせてくれる作品ですが、こちらの期待？をはぐらかし、安易に身を委ねることを拒むような雰囲気に包まれています。張りつめた緊張感というよりも、それこそジャズのイディオムを切り崩していこうとする作者の意図がそうさせたのだと思います。聴く側にも鍛錬を強いる孤高のピアニストは、どこまで登りつめていくのでしょうか？
