小さい頃から歌手を夢見ながら結局は平凡な主婦に落ち着き、満たされない毎日を送っていたアリス（エレン・バースティン）。夫の事故死の知らせが彼女の人生を一変させた。歌手として人生を出直すことを決意したアリスは、息子のトムと共に故郷モンタレーに向けて出発。アルバイトで生活費を稼ぎ、モーテル暮らしを続けながらようやくトゥーソンの町にたどり着くと、とりあえずウェイトレスとして働き始めた。そんなある日、店の常連客デイビッドに愛を打ち明けられるが･･･。
