若き弁護士ジェームズ(クリスチャン・スレーター)が担当することになったのは、アルカトラズ刑務所内の殺人事件。状況から判断して、犯人の囚人ヘンリー・ヤング(ケヴィン・ベーコン)の死刑は確実だった。だが、ジェームズはヘンリーのたどたどしい言葉を通して、刑務所内で行われていた悪夢のような虐待行為を知る。ジェームズはヘンリーの無罪を主張し、逆にあるか撮らず刑務所そのものを告発する。あまりにも巨大な敵を前に、2人の若者の孤独な闘いが始まった。
