本作のインスピレーションとなっているのは、彼をマイルス・デイヴィスやウェザー・リポートらをはじめとするジャズ/フュージョンの世界へと導いたプログレッシヴ・ロック、そして音楽を通して神を探求し、聖句について熟考すること。旧約聖書に登場する天国へと通じる梯子を意味するタイトルからもアルバムが持つテーマを伺うことが出来るだろう。

ゲストには同じノンサッチのレーベル・メイトでもあるパンチ・ブラザースのクリス・シーリーをはじめ、セシル・マクロリン・サルヴァント、マーク・ジュリアナ、ベッカ・スティーヴンス、ジョエル・フラームなどが参加。アルバムの中でメルドーは、スタインウェイ・ピアノの他、ムーグ・シンセサイザーやメロトロン、ハモンド・オルガン、グロッケンシュピール、KORG MS-20シンセサイザーなどを駆使している。
