Ex-Miles saxophonist on a spiritual journey with some sublime jazz travellers. On a recording that features two living legends in saxophonist Pharaoh Sanders and vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson, and giants of contemporary jazz that include drummer Brian Blade, expectations will inevitably run high. Fortunately, this all-star group delivers on all fronts. Generally considered the last significant graduate of Miles Davis' later bands, Kenny Garrett has proven a breath-taking post-bop soloist and charismatic bandleader since the beginning of the 1990s.

Inspired by his explorations of Chinese culture and dedicated to the masterly pianist McCoy Tyner, this new CD takes the listener on a rousing cultural and spiritual journey. It sometimes feels like a contemporary version of Coltrane's transcendental music of the '60s, especially with ex-Trane alumnus Sanders on such devastating form. Yet we also hear Garrett's lighter, more upbeat character on the joyful, oriental-influenced Qing Wen and poignant traditional melody of Tsunami Song. A contemporary jazz set of a deep and soulful nature.

このサウンドを聴いてまず思う事はコルトレーン！ ケニーはもちろんだが、ブライアンブレイドの中にあるエルヴィンの影響が溢れんばかりに録音されてます。こんなセッションを生で見れたら幸せだろうな。 ケニーとブライアンの組み合わせはマジックです。

まだ若手としての認識があるケニーも年齢的にいってもキャリアからいっても中堅どころ。中国滞在から生み出されたこのアルバムは、とても神秘的でしかしオリエンタリズムだけではない、何かを感じます。公式ホームページの解説を一読したところ、TunamiSongはスマトラ沖大地震の被害にあてた鎮魂曲のようです。自国にばかりに熱心な米国にあって、視野の広いミュージシャンだと感心しました。

Tsunami Songが東洋的なメロディーと雰囲気があふれて一番好きですが、なぜ Tsunami Songなんでしょうね？？ 日本人の持つ津波のイメージとは違うと思いますが、とにかく、全曲が東洋（この場合中国）の持つパワー、エキゾシズム、神秘性を想起させるユニークなアルバムです。
