18世紀中頃の南米。ヨーロッパ人たちが奴隷政策を進める中、教会は原住民たちへのキリスト教の布教活動を進めていた。その中でもガブリエル神父が開いたミッションは、人々が神を信じ、幸せに暮らす場所だった。ある時、奴隷商人のメンドーサが弟を殺した罪を負ってミッションへやってくる。彼はかつて奴隷として扱っていた人々に励まされ、罪をあがない、やがて彼らとともに生活するようになるが・・・。
