マーヴィンの原作にあった甘い高揚感はもうない。長く尾を引くトランペットの音は、挽歌のように切なく響き渡る。だが深刻なテーマ性とともになお、不幸を直視しながら同時に笑い飛ばしているような力強さと諧謔がある。洪水でも流せない音楽の都の伝統は、疑問符が絶望的に増殖する時代に相応しい形で歴史的傑作を蘇らせた。
