ブルースからロックンロールが生まれたこの物語は、1947年シカゴのサウスサイドの薄暗いバーから始まる。バーのオーナーで若く野心的なポーランド系移民レナード・チェスは、物静かな天才ギタリストのマディ・ウォーターズと、衝動的で派手なハーモニカ奏者リトル・ウォルター二人のブルース・コンボを雇う。彼らのサウンドに魅了されると同時に、急速に発展したレコード・ビジネスのブームに乗ろうとしたチェス。アルバムは、徐々にR&Bのチャートをのぼり、ラジオのヘビーローテーションの常連となっていく。
独特の演奏スタイル“ダックウォーク”でロックンロールの創始者となったチャック・ベリーや、才能豊かな若い女性アーティストのエタ・ジェイムズら、所属アーティストがアメリカ音楽のメインストリームに躍り出たのは、1955年のことだった。チェスは彼らを家族同様に扱い、ヒットの褒美にキャデラックを買い与えた。しかし、時代は次第に変化していく…。
