パリ、１８７０年代、オペラ座では“ファントム”（オペラ座の怪人）の仕業とされる謎の事件が続いていた。リハーサル中の事故で、プリマドンナの代役を務めることになったクリスティーヌは、その初主演のステージで喝采を浴び、幼馴染みのラウルと再会。
だが、その喜びも束の間、仮面をかぶった謎の怪人・ファントムにオペラ座の地下深くへと連れ去られる。クリスティーヌは、ファントムを亡き父が授けてくれた“音楽の天使”だと信じ密かに慕ってきたが、地下の隠れ家で仮面の下に隠されたファントムの正体を知ってしまう･･･。
