ピアノの低音部やマンドリンのかき鳴らしが異質どころか、ストライプスらしさを感じさせる不思議な作品です。ジャック・ホワイトの音づくりが何を楽器に持ってこようが左右されない性質のものであることが判ります。彼らの音楽はおちょくり精神にあふれたものが多い反面、そのいかがわしさがロックの原初的な感動を呼び起こすところがあります。おそらく計算づくでやっているのでしょう。ユーザーを驚かせ、間口を広げさせることがジャック・ホワイトの目的なのではないでしょうか。 わたしは彼らの音楽をブルーズの再現であるかのような論評を読むと不思議な気持ちがします。ブルーズの再現がポップ音楽でポピュラリティを獲得したことはないからです。レッド・ツェッペリンにしても、ストーンズにしてもそうです。ホワイト・ストライプスにしてもブルーズへの批評的アプローチは行っていますが、完コピを目指しているわけでもありません。実際に20年代のカントリー・ブルーズと音の感触は全然違います。ルーツの素晴らしさを説くあまり、ルーツを神格化しては、彼らの現代性を理解できないのではないでしょうか。

いつものように死ぬほどかっこ良くてどうしようもない①だなぁ、と思ったら、②以降の今までにないバリエーションの豊富さにビックリ。 傑作4thと6thに挟まれた微妙な立ち位置のアルバムですが、個人的に一番リピートしてるのはこれ。 良作。
