原題の「Les Enfants Terribles」は、ジャン・コクトーの有名な小説「恐るべき子供たち」のことで、グラスは、自らのカンパニーを率いてニューヨークのダンス・シーンで活躍しているスーザン・グラハムと組み、死と退廃と、そして奔放な想像力に彩られたコクトー独特の世界を“ダンス・オペラ”として再構成しています。編成は３台のピアノに４人の歌手＆ダンサー。計８名の歌手とダンサーは、小説のふたりの主人公−早熟でかつ無邪気、やがて死に至る空想を弄ぶ−ポールとエリザベートの姉弟を、あるときは交互に、あるときはともに演じるという特異な構成を採っています。
なお、ピアノ奏者のひとりとして、グラス自身も録音に参加しています。
