Ninja Tuneが送る未来的Mix CDシリーズ第四弾登場！

2001年にはじまった＜Ninja Tune＞のMix CDシリーズ、『Solid Steel』。 Dj Mixの未来を創造するというコンセプトのもと、毎回他に類を見ない技術とセンスを持ったつわものが担当し、多くのへッズからの熱い支持を得ているこのシリーズ。前作から10ヶ月、待望の第四弾が完成した。今回Mixを担当するのは、Ninja Tuneの中核を担う寡黙なブラジリアン、Amon Tobin。
Dj Food/Dkによってはじめられ、Hexstatic、Herbaliserとバトンを移してきたこの『Solid Steel』シリーズ。3台のターンテーブルを使用したり、音（聴覚）のみならず視覚にも訴えかけるような独自の世界観を持ってMix CDの未来を切り開いてきた。もともとはNinja Tuneウェブサイトにて行われているラジオ配信のためのプログラムとして製作されていたDj MixをCDフォーマットでも展開しはじめたのがこのシリーズのスタートだった。
90年代以降最も重要かつ最もポピュラーな音楽的手法、サンプリングをいち早く提示し、その枠組みを常に広げてきたダイエー帝国の切貼魔術師集団Coldcutが主宰する＜Ninja Tune＞。そんな彼らのアイデアと感性がぎっしりと詰まったこのシリーズは、だからこそ通常のMix CDよりも刺激的なものであるということが言えよう。
第四弾の指揮を執るAmon Tobinは今回、ターンテーブルを使用していない。2003年から行われてきた彼のDj/Liveツアーの最終日の模様をライヴ録音した今作で彼が使用しているのは、ファイナルスクラッチというソフトウェアである。Richie HawtinがMix CD『Richie Hawtin / De9 - Closer To The Edit』でいち早く使用したこのソフトは、膨大な量と重さを誇るアナログレコードをデータとして取り込みパソコンの画面上でMixできるだけでなく、その一部分／フレーズ／素材だけを抜き取り、貼り付け、まったく新しい曲を構成していくことが出来るのだ。前述のRichie HawtinのMix CDでは、Carl Craigの名曲“Climax”の浮遊感ある上モノだけが取り出され、次々と変わっていくビートの上で幾度にも渡って効果的に鳴らされていたのが強く印象に残っていることかと思う。
Amon Tobinは今回、自分の曲と他アーティストの楽曲を半分ずつ程の割合で選び抜きつないでいる。全部で29のセンテンツ、32曲がクレジットされているが、このクレジット以上の情報量がこのCDには詰められている。前述のとおりファイナルカットの使用によりLive Mix中にありとあらゆる音源のなかからあるフレーズだけを被せている作業が、おそらく膨大に盛り込まれているからである。普段からサンプリングを中心に楽曲を組み立てているAmon Tobinにとっては、まさに頭で鳴っている音を具現化するのに最も適したソフトだったのではないかと思われる。Danny BreaksからAfx、T Power、Dizzee Rascalなど様々な音をMixするとともに同時にエディットし、ブレンドしていくこのMix CDは、Dj Mixという地平をまた一歩前へ進ませるものだろう。サンプリングという概念の最終形態ともいえるこの技法のなかで、それでもAmon Tobinの個性がしっかりと滲み出ている。そんな素晴らしいMix CDなのだ、これは。
