【HMVインタビュー】タイヨンダイ・ブラクストン

6年振りのニューアルバム『Hive1』をリリースした、元バトルスのタイヨンダイ・ブラクストンが単独ツアーの為に来日。 7月2日、大盛況だった恵比寿 LIQUIDROOMでの東京公演（宇川直宏、ＥＹヨが参加）の翌日、 30名限定の音楽制作講座（The Art of Listening LIVE! ＃1 Special Lecture TYONDAI BRAXTON）直前という多忙なスケジュールの合間を縫って、ニューアルバムについて話を聞くことが出来た。

-- 今回のアルバムは一言で言うと何と表現しますか？
How will you express your new album?

Tyondai Braxton（以下TB）：なんて表現するか？アブストラクト・エレクトロニックミュージックかな。
How would I express it? I would say its abstract electronic music.

-- 今回のアルバムは「HIVE1」というタイトルですが、「HIVE2」「HIVE3」と続く予定ですか？
The new album is called “HIVE1” will it be continue on to “HIVE2” and “HIVE3”?

TB：なんかしらのシリーズにはなると思ってるよ。でもいくつまで続けるかは決めてないんだ。でも続けられるように一作目はあえて数字をつけて、他のアルバムをシリーズとして続けられるようにしたんだ。
I do think it’s going to be a series of some kind. I’m not sure how many I’ll do. But I set it up by numbering the first one in order to be able to subsequently add different records as a series.

-- 「3」以上に続く可能性も？
So there may be more than 3 albums?

TB：可能性はあるね。
Potentially, yes.

-- 今回はソロ・アーティストとしてアルバムを発表されましたが、オーケストラやバンドとしてやるのとは違いますか？
This time you released an album as a solo artist. How is it different as to when you are with orchestras or a band?

TB：HIVEはパーカッション3名とモジュラーシンセサイザー2名の５ピースグループで、そのメンバーで演奏するから可能な音楽、見せ方が出来るから本当楽しいよ。そしてソロの方は僕が一人でやることだからオーケストラでやる音楽とは違うね。違うやり方だね。
HIVE exists as a 5 piece group with 3 percussionists and 2 modular synth performer and that’s another way I’m able to perform some of this music in a different way and that’s exciting. And the solo music or the solo alteration it’s just me doing it so the orchestra music is a different things that I do. It’s a different way of working.

-- レコーディングも違うのですか？
Is the recording different too?

TB：うん、違うね。でもどの作品をレコーディングする時も頭でイメージしていたものを試してみるけど、実際やってみると全然違うものになるんだよね。今回の作品も今までの作品とまったく違う作り方をしたから本当どう完成するか分からなかったよ。
Yes, but I feel that every record that I’ve ever done you always have an idea in mind and you try it out and it ends up being pretty substantially different from what you thought it would be. With this record I used such a different way of making the music compared to previous records that I’ve done that I really didn’t know what it was going to end up being like.

-- ちなみにどこから曲を作り始めるとかありますか？ドラムラインとかベースラインとかメロディーとか...。
Do you have a particular style of making your music? Like from the drum line, base line or the melody?

TB：それは作品によるね。今回の作品はモジュラーシンセサイザーにすごくフォーカスしたから、そこをスターティングポイントにすることは多かったよ。でもパーカッションも使っていたから、そこから曲を書き始めることもあったかな。そうだね。今回の作品はその2つからって事が多かったな。
It depends. I mean for this record being that I’ve focused so much on the modular synthesizer, I ended up using that as a starting point in a lot of ways. There’s also percussion on the record and sometimes I will start by writing out the percussion parts. So yea, there those 2 different ways for this record.

-- レコーディングにも特徴あったりするんですか？
Is the recording different too?

TB：モデュラーの部分は僕が自分でレコーディングして、パーカッションとかはスタジオに行ってレコーディングするから特別な違いはないかな。「Ableton」とか「Max for Live」といったソフトウェアを結構使うから結構クリエイティブな事できるけど、そういうこと以外、特別変わったことはしてないかな。
I record the modular parts myself and then I went to the studio to record the percussion so nothing too different. I use a lot of software like “Ableton” and “max for live” stuff like that so I use to have a lot more creative music but besides that nothing too unorthodox.

-- 今回共演した宇川直宏さんや伊藤高志さんはどうでした？
How was it to perform with Ukawa Naohiro and Mr.Ito.

TB：本当才能のあるアーティストだからどう一つに体現するか考えるのが楽しかったよ。
It was great such an amazing artists so it was great to find ways to come together.

-- どういう経緯で一緒にやることが決まったんですか？
How did it happen?

TB：僕が来日することが決定した段階で提案されたんだ。一緒にできたら良いんじゃないかって。本当楽しみにしてたよ。
It was suggested once it became clear that I was playing here in Tokyo I was suggested that we should do something together. So I was excited to do it.

-- 昨日のパフォーマンスですが、聴覚からの刺激、視覚からの刺激が本当すごかったです。ご本人としてはどのような感じでしたか？
I went to your performance last night and the impact from both hearing and visual was amazing. How was it as a performer?

TB：本当最高だったよ。本当全てが融合する奇跡的な瞬間だったよ。ヒロとはあの夜をどうしたいかって考え方が似てたから本当楽しかったよ。
It was amazing. It was one of those great situation where things come together in a really magical way. I was really excited that Hiro and I thought in similar ways about what we wanted to do that night so yea, it was really fun.

-- ファンの反応はどうでした？
How were your fans?

TB：最高。本当みんなの為にパフォーマンスするの楽しみにしてたよ。本当最高だった。
Great. Very excited to play for them. It was amazing.

-- DJで参加したEYEさんはどうでした？
How was DJ EYE?

TB：最高。彼もリスペクトする人の一人なんだ。彼の音楽は最高だよ。いろんなことをするからね。大切なアーティストだからショーに一緒に参加してもらえて良かったよ。
Amazing. He’s another person who I have a lot of respect for. I really love EYE’s music. He does so many different things. He’s an important artist and it was great to have him a part of the show.

-- BOREDOMS の音楽は聞いたことあるんですか？
Have you ever listened to BOREDOMS’s music?

TB：あるよ。もちろん。
Yes, yes of course.

-- 日本での楽しみ、楽しかったことがあったら教えてください。
What are you looking forward to do in Japan? Or what was exciting that you did?

TB：今回あまり探索できる時間がなかったんだ。でも日本には何回も来たことがあるからいつもいろんな物見て楽しんでるよ。でも今回新幹線に乗ったよ。何回乗っても楽しいよ。でもあまり出歩けなかったな。
This time I didn’t have as much time to explore as much. I’ve been here a bunch of times though and I’ve always enjoyed seeing all sorts of stuff here. I did take the bullet train this time which is always fun. To Osaka. That was fun. I didn’t really walk around too much.

-- 電車が好きなんですか？
You like trains?

TB：電車乗るのは好きだね。でも新幹線は別格で楽しいね。怖いくらい。早くて。
I do love taking the train but that train is really fun and maybe scary too. So fast.

-- 今日音楽講座があると思うのですが、簡単にモジュラーの魅力を教えてください。
Can you tell us a little about the modular synthesizer? The beauty of it?

TB：僕がモジュラーシンセサイザーの魅力だと思うのは、他の楽器ではできない事ができるからかな。アナログなものでもあるからデジタル音じゃなくてリアルな音だってこと。洗礼された音だから人間には作り上げることが出来なくて、そういった音を創り上げていけるところが魅力かな。
I think for me what I’m excited about the modular synthesizer is the fact that it’s an instrument that can do things that no regular instrument can do but it’s also an analog instrument which means it’s technically a real sound it’s not digital. But it sounds so, it’s able to make sounds at a level of sophistication that you wouldn’t be able to make as a human. So it’s really exciting to be able to craft those kind of sounds.

-- 自身が持っているモジュラーも結構な配線がつながってたりするんですか？大きい物なんですか？
Is your modular big with many connections?

TB：いや、そんなに大きくないよ。アメリカにはもうちょっと大きいの持っているけど、パフォーマンスの時は少し小さいのでやってるんだ。
No it’s not that big. Back home In America I have a bigger synth but when I perform I just have a small modular.

-- 曲を作っている時、パフォーマンスする時で変えたりしますか？
Do you use different ones when you make the music and when you perform?

TB：そうだね。大きいモジュラーの方がもっといろんな事ができるんだ。そこに持っている紙に書いてるやつともう一個を一緒に使ってるんだ。より幅の広い音が作り上げられて、可能性が広がるんだ。
Yea, at least I have more options when I use my bigger synthesizer. I use that one you have in the picture with another one and kind of combine them. It just gives you more options to make different sounds.

-- モジュラーシンセはコードの差し込む箇所を変える事によって音質が変わると思いますが、曲によってどこに刺せば気持ち良いとかを覚えていらっしゃいますか？
The sound must change where you connect it. Do you have everything memorized where it feels good for you?

TB：かなり練習が必要だったよ。変わったやり方だからね。でも理解が出来てきたらだんだん早くできるようになってくるよ。
It took a lot of practice because it a strange way of working but once you start to understand how to do it, you can work more quickly.

-- 自分の気持良い音質の場所は見つかりました？
Did you already find your comfortable connection?

TB：うん、でも時間がかかったな。結構長い時間ね。シンセサイザーはそういうふうにセットできるんだよ。色んな設定をね。だから、シンセサイザーを分かれば分かるほど様々な使い方が気持ち良く使えるようになるんだよ。どうセットすればどういう事をしてくれるかが分かるようになってくるんだ。
Yes, but it took a while. It took a long time. You can set the synthesizer like that. You can set it up in a bunch of different ways any time you play it. So the more you become familiar with the instrument, the more comfortable you are working in a bunch of different way. You know what it will do depending on how you patch it.

-- ライブ中は、曲ごとに違うセッティングに変えたりしてるんですか？
Do you change the setting every track during the show?

TB：こういうショーは事前にどういう事がしたいか、どうセットしたいかも考えてどんな結果が欲しいかを今だったら分かるから、毎回大変な訳ではないかな。毎回セットできるけど、やりたいことが分かってるから似たセットの仕方をしてるかな。
Yea, for these shows that I do I kind of think ahead of time know how I want to patch it at this point to get the certain results so it’s not different every time. I could set the synth every time but I know what I want to do so I patch it in a similar way for the shows each time.

-- 明日地球の最後の日だったら何を最後に聴きますか？
What the last song you would listen to if tomorrow was the last day.

TB：ふむ。僕なら・・・。良い質問だね。もし明日が最後の日だったら・・・R.E.Mの“It’s the end of the world as you know it”かな。（邦題：世界が終る日）
I … would listen to um. That’s a good question. If tomorrow is the last day I would listen to R.E.M “It’s the end of the world as you know it”

-- 自分のアルバムは聴かないですか？ You wouldn’t listen to your own songs?

TB：うん、聴かない。
No.

-- 好きなアーティストはいますか？
What kind of music do you like to listen to?

TB：いろいろなエレクトロニックのアーティスト好きだよ。オウテカ、エイフェックス・ツインとか。オーケストラも好きだね。
Yea, I like a lot of different electronic artists like Autechre, Aphex Twin, I like a lot of orchestral music.

-- エイフェックス・ツイン、最近出しましたものね。1月に発売したEPとか。
Oh, Aphex Twin. Like the EP he just released in January?

TB：うん、最高だったよ。
Yes, great.

-- 影響受けたりしますか？
Do you get influenced?

TB：そうだね。彼の作品は影響力あるからね。
Yea, I think all his work is influential.

-- 今度HMV&BOOKSが今年の秋にオープンいたします。ご自身が影響を受けた作家、好きな作品があれば教えてください。
HMV will be opening a new book store called “HMV&BOOKS TOKYO” this autumn. Is there any authors or books that you like?

TB：そうだね。最後に読んだ本で好きだったのはデイブ・エガーズの「ザ・サークル」って小説でインターネット・プライバシーにまつわる話だったな。ぱっと聞いた感じより面白いんだよ。あ、あと「ゲーム・オブ・スローンズ」も読んだな。面白かったよ。
Last think I read that I really liked was this book by Dave Eggers called “The Circle” it’s a novel about internet privacy but it’s actually more exciting than it sounds. Oh I read the “Game of Thrones”. Those are fun.

-- 本を読むときに聴く音楽はありますか？
Do you listen to music when you read books?

TB：いや、無音の中読むかな。
No, just silence.

-- この本を読むと音楽が聴きたくなる、みたいなことはありますか？
Is there any particular books that makes you want to read?

TB：音楽を聴きたくならせるような本はないけど、本を読むことも音楽も好きな理由は同じかな。レコードを聴くことも本を読むのもストーリーがあって、一種のナレーションが行われているような感覚。そういう事が僕にとって魅力なんだ。
Maybe it doesn’t make me want to read but I love music and reading for the same reasons of feeling that there’s a story, sense of narrative going through whether it’s listening to a record or reading a story. Those things are appealing to me.

-- 今度オープンするお店は洋書とかもいっぱい扱うお店になります。もし、また来日することがあったら是非お店の方にも来てみてください。
