【訃報】 Loleatta Holloway

今週の月曜日、3月21日にシカゴ出身のソウル･シンガーのロリータ・ハロウェイが急逝。享年64歳でした。
ロリータというと、ハウス/ガラージ・ファンの方が馴染み深い存在。 サルソウル傘下のゴールドマインドから 「Love Sansation」、「Hit And Run」といったガラージ･クラシックを残し、 ダン・ハートマン「Vertigo〜Relight My Fire」やサウルソウル･オーケストラとの仕事でも知られ、多くの有名DJがプレイしたものです。 最近もホイットニー･ヒューストンの復帰曲「Million Dollar Bill」に彼女の「We're Getting Stronger」が使われるなどしておりました。
しかし、それらの楽曲がフロアのピーク時を盛り上げたのも、彼女のゴスペルをルーツにしたディープな歌唱があったからこそ。 特に初期のアウェア時代のバラードの素晴らしさは一家言あるソウル・ファンも納得するほど。 1975年に発表したセカンド・アルバム『Cry To Me』に収録されたサム･ディーズ作の同タイトル曲は涙なくしては聴けません・・・。 シンガーとして成熟期に入った時期の1978年のバニー･シグラーとのデュエット「Only You」も忘れてはなりませんね。
