While Scott possesses one of the finest voices in popular music, and produced four classics prior to this, his fifth solo effort, Til The Band Comes In, is a ’fans only’ effort at best. It even tests the patience of his most ardent admirers. Still, if taken not as a Scott Walker album, but a product of its time, it serves to at least illustrate the man had talent, no matter how poor the taste appears here.

ソロで入ってる’エスターオファリン’の声が恰も形而上の世界に届けとばかりに輝いている。女声の極致である。男の耳には慈母観音の如くに響く。スコットが創り出したメロディと其の詩もこの声に合わせたかのようだ。フィルスペクターのウォールオブサウンド的味わいはとっくに消え去っているがその代りのオーケストラをタップリと響かせるピーターナイトのアレンジが涙を誘うほど美しい。

財布泣かせの今回の紙ジャケシリーズでもこれは嬉しい再発です。シリアスな前作から一変ポップで明るいアルバムですが（スマイルジャケも）、そのまま丸くなったわけじゃないことは百も承知なので、気持ち良く聴けます。いいアルバムです。
