この曲を再録音した指揮者は彼以外にいないのでは。指揮者自身の愛好曲ファウスト交響曲。壮大なスケールはまさにこの指揮者の得意とするところ。私自身の愛好曲でもあり、何十種類も聴いてきましたが、ベストを争う名演だと思います。ボストン交響楽団の力量によるところも大でしょう。

晩年のバーンスタインの演奏はやや鈍重なテンポが多く好きになれませんでしたが、この演奏は大変キビキビした切れの良い指揮っぷりで、自分なりのファウストのイメージに合っています。BSOの響きも豊穣でボストンポップスばりに色彩感豊かに演奏していました。一流オケの面目躍如という感じです。

　大変わかりやすい交響曲である。Ｎ響も定期で好演していた。バーンスタイン/ボストン響のＣＤはこの曲の老舗的存在だが、いま聴いても新鮮である。

Bernstein breathes deep... and brings all the beauties of this score to the fore. His first movement is vibrant; then comes a beautifully moving ’Gretchen’...and finally a contrasting third movement, with a menacing beginning and a celestial closing chorus (and singing). Only Gauk (Brilliant Classics), Argenta (Decca) and Horenstein (Vox) came close to Lennie, but unfortunately they recorded the version without chorus and singing. All other conductors had nothing to say...
