This is a very special disc. No one has been able to play this great Rachmaninoff Piano Sonata like Zarafiants, in my opinion. The breadth, overwhelmingly rich sonority, and the sheer daring of his tempi are enough to make most people nervous, but not this listener, who always felt that the piece is played too quickly. A little lack of tension at the end is not too disturbing, and overall this is a magnificent, tremendous disc which I hope will be made more available in the West. Lloyd Arriola
