I discovered Peronica on Myspace. I was immediately captivated by the 80’s-influenced, electronic pop sound of the songs ジェニーはご機嫌ななめ and 瞑想ジュテーム. The instrumentation has a simple, yet nostalgic and pleasantly ethereal sound. All of this is topped by toyotty’s auto-tuned vocals. Generally, I don’t like this style of vocals, but it really works well with the music, reinforcing a sense of playful ennui. Peronica must have a lot of different influences, because they cover quite a few different genres, just in these 7 tracks. There are the more electronically-oriented songs, but also some acoustic pop tracks. They show even more eclectic influences with occasional guitar solos and a pretty experimental noisy section on the otherwise poppy track ノンレムSwimming. The band’s three members all have a turn at singing throughout the CD, which further adds to the variety. The bottom line: I highly recommend Peronica to anyone looking for some good indie pop! I’m really looking forward to whatever their next release has to offer!
