地球内部の研究を行っていた大学教授のトレバーは、ある日、甥っ子のショーンを預かることに。ショーンの愛読書「地底旅行」の中に、失踪した地質学者の兄が書き記したメモを発見したトレバーは、そこに謎が隠されてると考えショーンとアイスランドへ。兄が地震センサーを残したスネフェル山へ山岳ガイドのハンナと向かうが、3人は落雷に遭って洞窟に閉じこめられてしまう。脱出を試みる彼らだったが、地中へ続く穴に落ちてしまい…。
