LL Cool J、デフジャム最後のアルバム

長きに渡り、Def Jamを支えてきたLL Cool Jが13作目にしてDef Jam最後の作品を完成！ デビューから約23年間在籍し、13枚というとんでもない契約をきちんと果たしたLL。彼は女性に人気だが、そういう筋を通すところは男から見ても惚れてしまう。
注目の『Exit 13』は約2年の歳月を費やして制作。 最近、多くなってきた映画の仕事を断ってでも、録音を優先し、丹精込めて作ったというアルバムだ。
アルバムに先駆けてリリースしたオフィシャル･シングルはThe-Dreamをフィーチャーしたキャッチーでメロディアスなアップチューン「Baby」。 セカンドシングルは近年接近し話題を呼んでいる50 CentをフィーチャーしたScott Scorchによる「Feel My Heart Beat」。
アルバムには御大Marley Marlがプロデュースした「You Better Watch Me」や、Grandmaster Cazをフィーチャーした「This Is Ring Tone M...」などパイオニアを迎え、長きに渡りシーンを牽引してきた LLなりのヒップホップ･カルチャーへのリスペクトが伺える。異色なところでBon JoviのギタリストRichie Sambora、Def JamとThe Incとひと悶着あったLil Moもフィーチャー。 また、Bad BoyのプロデューサーRyan LeslieやヒットメイカーWyclef Jeanの他、ソニーの新人ユニットThe DEYの紅一点Élan、Funkmaster Flex、Fat Joe、Sheek LouchなどNY勢がゲスト参加！

本名ジェイムス・トッド・スミス。1969年8月16日生まれ、ニューヨーク州はクイーンズ地区セント・アルバンズ出身。MCネームのLL Cool Jは“Ladies Love Cool James”を略したもの。84年にDef Jam第一弾ラッパ−として"I Need A Beat"でデビュー。当時弱冠16歳だった。これまでの作品は以下の通り。

1984年 ラッセル・シモンズとリック・ルービンによって設立。当初配給はCBS Records/Columbia Recordsだった。
1985年 レーベル第一弾アルバム、LL Cool Jの『Radio』をリリース。
1986年 Beastie Boys見参。『Licensed to Ill』をリリース。
1987年 LLが大ヒットを記録し、Public EnemyがDef Jamとサイン。
1988年 Public Enemy『It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back』、Slick Rick『Great Adventures of Slick Rick』リリース。
1989年 Public Enemyがデフ・ジャムの顔に。
1990年 EPMD（『Business as Usual』）が移籍、デフ・ジャムも組織拡大
1992年 解散・分裂が相次ぎ、ラッセル曰く「暗黒の時代」
1993年 ウェスト信仰。Onyx人気。
1994年 Warren G『Regulate... G Funk Era』、Method Man『Tical』。PolyGramが50％を出資することに。
1995年 映画『THE SHOW』公開。Ll Cool J『Mr. Smith』。
1996年 Foxy Brown『Ill Nana』とRedman『Muddy Waters』のブレイクで再び最重要レーベルに。
1998年 PolyGram合併に伴い、Def JamはUniversal Music Group傘下に。DMXブレイク。
1999年 Roc-A-Fella Records完全移籍。R&B専門レーベルDef Soul Records設立。 Dru Hill、 Kelly Price、112、Musiq、Montell Jordanなどが所属していた。 Irv Gotti率いるMurder Inc. Records（Ja Rule, Ashanti）と契約。
2000年 Def Jam Japan発足。NITRO MICROPHONE UNDERGROUND、DABO、S-WORDなどが所属していた。LudcrisのDisturbing Tha Peaceも扱うようになる。
2002年 Def Soul解体。Def Jamに吸収される。
2003年 Irv GottiがNYのギャングと麻薬取引疑惑。
2005年 Jay ZがDef JamのCEOに就任。
2006年 NasがDef Jamに移籍。
2007年 Jay Z、Def JamのCEOを退任。Roc-A-FellaはDef Jam内に残ることに。 Jermaine DuprがIsland / Def Jamのトップに。
2008年 LL Cool J、『Exit 13』を最後にDef Jamを去ることに。
