Most Solid Visual Band: D'espairs Ray!

The Japanese so-called "visual" rock scene is getting hotter and hotter here in Japan and elsewhere in the world. Among the group of "visual" bands one of the most happening right now are D'espairs Ray!!!

D'espairs Ray were formed on September 9th, 1999, by the four original members - Hizumi (vo), Karyu (G), Zero (B) and Tsukasa (Dr).

From the beginning they were known as the most hard-working, prolific indie band around. They developed their firm career with thorough touring and constant record-making and have grown into one of the most solid live acts in Japan.

The band have stuck onto the one and sole theme throughout their history - "Darkness and Destruction", based on which they have created their own unique world of music. Their world of sound can probably be best remembered with the vocalist Hizumi's death voice and shouts, and the frequent use of synthesizers - which is rather rare for a visual band. As par their sole theme lots of the band's tracks are heavy and dark, but these days more mellow songs are coming out from them.

Fans, whom the band call "Manias", always formed an important part of their world, and so the band often held very unique fan events made "mania"-exclusive offers and successfully captured a strong fanbase. That is true not only in Japan but in other countries as well. D'espairs Ray attracted a lot of attention overseas from early years, and finally in 2004 they got to play live outside Japan for the first time. Ever since then they have been constantly on international tour circuit.

A particularly important turning point probably was the world-famous rock festival "Taste Of Chaos" tour that travels around 43 cities in the US. Through the lengthy tour of America the band succeeded in raising their profile in the US heavy music scene.

Aside from those background knowledge it would be best for you to get a grasp of the band through their music. D'espairs Ray are now releasing a brand new CD-maxi single titled "Brilliant" which will be released on May 14th. Their most successful title so far is "Mirror", an album released in 2006 that won raving reviews around the world.
