Pete Rock

We have interviewed the legendary HipHop producer and rapper, Pete Rock by an international call! We've asked questions about a brand new album "NY's Finest"!!

Congratulations on releasing a new album. How do you feel by now?
Thanks. It feels good. People are supportive anywhre I go, even California. A one difficult thing is to be played on a radio station.

The title of an album is "NY's Finest", why is it not "Soul Survivor III"?
It has been many years since I've released "Soul Survivor II", so I did not want to insist on that name. I wanted to name straightforward title so the listners can get hold of a concept.

There are numerous guest artists in a new album, how did you chose them? I never thought you're going to make a joint with Jim Jones & Max B.
The guest artists in my new album were chosen upon a concept of "finest rappers in New York". I've asked some artists to be in an album such as Redman and Little Brother. I made a joint with Jim Jones & Max B because they are talented even though they're young.

Which joint was most impressive to you?
"Till I Retire"(Track 3)

In a song "Ready Fe War", you've used a line from Peter Tosh's documentary, is there any special reason for using that line?
I used it because it was really funny. Especially when a guy says "Move your Bonboclaaaat!"

What do you want listners to feel by listening to your album?
I want listeners to hear the sounds that I make now, and feel the difference from the past albums.

There are many hiphop producers who got influenced from you including J. Dilla and 9th Wonder. Is there any producer that you feel same vibe or same groove?
Dilla's beat was closest to beat that I make. I think he has studied my beat the most.

Is there any artist that you wish to produce?
There are many artists that I want to produce, but especially LL Cool J, Mary J. Blige and Keyshia Cole.

What kind of music do you listen to recently?
I've been listening to 80's Rock music, the artists such as Doobie Brothers, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Kiss and Ozzy Osbourne.

This is a question about music industry, we, the CD retail company are having struggle with CD sales, the digital download is getting popular in the US as well. How do you feel about about it?
Downloading situation is killing the record sales, and the artists are not really making money. Far as the rap concerns, there is no point of selling artists besides 50 Cent and Jay-Z because those are the 2 biggest selling artists, anybody else is in the same boat.

So you'll be coming down to Japan in May?
Yeah, I'll be there from May 1st to May 12th. I can stay in Tokyo for just a day, I wish I could stay longer but I have to what's according to the schedule so. I hope I'll get to see many people out there.
