メキシコ国境に近い砂漠にて。
逃げる男：ルウェリン・モス（ジョシュ・ブローリン） ハンター、モスは、偶然死体に囲まれたトラックを発見する。その荷台には大量のヘロインと現金200万ドル。彼は人生を大きく変えることを知りながらも、その金に手を出す。
追う男１：アントン・シガー（ハビエル・バルデム） 消えた金を取り戻すために雇われた、異様な風貌の殺し屋シガーは、ルールにやたら執着し、生真面目で冷酷。邪魔者を躊躇なく殺しながら、モスの後を追う。
追う男２：エド・トム・ベル（トミー・リー・ジョーンズ） 事件発覚後、保安官ベルはモスの身柄を保護するため、そして殺し屋シガーを捕らえるために二人の行方を追い始める。
逃亡劇―そして三者を待ち受ける運命
転がる運命は誰にもとめられない、
それぞれの過信がすべてを狂わせる
“追う者”と“追われる者”、“法と正義を信じる者”―アメリカ西部を舞台にした三者三様の追跡・逃亡劇は、人間の無力さと、愚かさ、絶対に抗うことの出来ない運命を、可笑しいほど残酷に描き出す。
人間の可笑しさと哀しさを描き続ける異才兄弟監督、ジョエル＆イーサン・コーエン監督。これまでの作品に共通するノワール的要素を含みながら、本作では常にこだわりぬく音楽をあえて抑制。静寂が引き起こす緊迫感と恐怖を観ている者の内側から引き出すという新たな挑戦を試みている。
コーエン兄弟らしさをたっぷりと凝縮しながらも、さらに一歩先へと踏み込んだ本作は、2007年カンヌ国際映画祭コンペティション部門に出品され批評家からも大絶賛。2008年アカデミー賞では作品賞、監督賞、助演男優賞、脚色賞を受賞、堂々の4冠！
