1997年のアルバム『Time Out of Mind』発売25周年 ― 中期を代表する傑作を新たな視点で見つめ直す ボブ・ディラン〈ブートレッグ・シリーズ〉第17集
1997年、通算30作目となるアルバム『Time Out of Mind』の発売25周年記念企画となるボブ・ディラン〈ブートレッグ・シリーズ〉の第17集『Fragments: Time Out Of Mind Sessions 1996-1997』。
『Time Out of Mind』は、ダニエル・ラノワをプロデューサーに起用し、緻密で大胆なサウンドをバックにしたディランの巧みな表現力により傑作の一つに挙げられている。
全米チャート最高10位を記録、翌98年の第40回グラミー賞で「最優秀アルバム賞」を獲得し、収録された「Cold Irons Bound」では同賞の「男性ロック・ボーカル部門賞」に輝いた。
ディランのキャリア中期を代表するこの傑作を新たな視点で見つめ直すことを意図して企画された今回の『Fragments: Time Out Of Mind Sessions 1996-1997』では、これまで公開されることのなかった96年テアトロでの、ボブ・ディラン、ダニエル・ラノワ (g, org)、トニー・ガーニエ (b)、トニー・マングリアン (ds, per) によるセッションで生まれた、いわば原型とも呼べる状態から、ディランと彼のツアーメンバーが98年から2001年にかけてステージで残した熱気あふれるライヴパフォーマンスの数々へと進化して様子を克明に追っていく。

CD５枚組のデラックス、およびCD２枚組のスタンダードエディションのCD１には、『Time Out Of Mind』のオリジナル盤に収録された11曲の2022年リミックスが収められている。
リミックスを手がけたのは、ブラウアーサウンドスタジオのマイケル・Ｈ・ブラウアー。音楽評論家のスティーヴン・ハイデンはライナーノーツでこう書いている。「スタジオにいたミュージシャンたちが実際にどのように演奏してアルバム全体を仕上げていったかがわかるようなサウンドにリミックスされている。ラノワが録音後に加えた効果や処理は除かれているのだ。しかしそれは、四分の一世紀前に複数部門でグラミーを獲得している名作をつくり替えてしまうことを意図した行為ではない。偉大な芸術作品を見つめ直し、新たな視点で提示しようとした結果なのだ」。
オリジナル作品のサウンドは神秘的で謎めいたものだったが、2022年版の『Time Out Of Mind』では、聴き手と演奏者の距離を可能なかぎり縮めることに主観が置かれている。また、この2022年リミックス版『Time Out Of Mind』は、ディランのレコーディング作品としては初めて、イマーシヴオーディオ (立体音響) でも提供される予定だ。

デラックスエディションのCD２〜３に収められているのは、貴重なアウトテイクとオルタネイトヴァージョン。いずれも『Time Out Of Mind』のために書かれたオリジナル曲だが、97発表時のソングリストには含まれなかった「Dreamin' of You」「Red River Shore」「Mississippi」(のちにあらためて録音したヴァージョンが2001年のアルバム『Love And Theft』に収められた)、「Marchin' To The City」も収録されている。
そして、もう１つの未発表パフォーマンスが、スコットランド起源のトラディショナルフォークソングをディラン自身のアレンジで歌った「The Water is Wide」。『Time Out Of Mind』を締めくくる叙事詩的な「Highlands」の前触れともいえるこの曲が、CD２のオープニングに据えられている。
デラックスエディションのCD４に収められているのは、『Time Out Of Mind』収録曲のライヴパフォーマンス。98年から2001年にかけて残された音源のなかから選ばれたもので、98年５月21日LA公演でのライヴ録音となる「Make You Feel My Love」は、「Things Have Changed」のマキシシングルのカップリングに収められていたものだが、それ以外の収録曲は、いずれも完全未発表のヴァージョンだ。
またファンへのボーナスとも呼べるCD５には、オリジナルの『Time Out Of Mind』からは外された曲と、「Cold Irons Bound」「Tryin' To Get To Heaven」の素晴らしいライヴヴァージョンで構成されている。これらの12曲は、2008年リリースのブートレッグシリーズ第８集『Tell Tale Signs (Rare And Unreleased 1989-2006)』に収められていたものだ。
