訃報：マーヴィン･ジュニア

右端がマーヴィン･ジュニア史上最高のヴォーカル･グループの1つに数えられるデルズのリード･ヴォーカル、マーヴィン･ジュニアが5月29日（水）、シカゴで亡くなりました。享年77歳。
デルズは1952年、シカゴで結成。ハイスクールで知り合ったマーヴィン・ジュニアを含む5人で結成。当初はエル・レイズ名義で活動し、チェスから1953年にデビュー。 55年にはヴィー･ジェイへ移籍、翌年「Oh What A Nite」をヒットさせます。 その後、メンバーのジョニー･フランチェスが脱退し、フラミンゴスにいたジョニー･カーターが加入 以降、50年以上メンバーチェンジをしない鉄壁の体制に。
デルズというと、マーヴィンの雄雄しいバリトン・ヴォイスと09年に亡くなったジョニー・カーターのファルセットが織り成すコントラストはまさに伝説で、 それまでのドゥーワップ形態が中心だった当時のヴォーカル･グループ・シーンに新たなスタイルを提示した 革新的な存在だったと言われています。
ヴィー･ジェイが倒産した後チェスに戻り、60年代末から70年代にかけて、「There Is」、「Stay In My Corner」、「Give Your Baby A Standing Ovation」を次々とヒットさせ、その後、マーキューリー、ABC、シャイ・サウンドなどを渡り歩きながらも、 流行に左右されることなくデルズらしさを貫きとおし、2004年にはグループでロックの殿堂入りを果たしています。
1991年、架空のヴォーカルグループの人生を追ったロバート・タウンゼント監督の映画『The Five Heartbeat』でデルズはアドバイザーを担当。モデルもデルズとテンプスといわれているので、そちらも機会があればぜひ。
