レニー・ホワイト久々の新作で

レニー流ブラック・ジャズ・ロックと呼べる骨太サウンド。複数のギタリスト、そして盟友スタンリー・クラークを迎えた、極めつけハード・クロスオーヴァー。



2008年、大いに話題をさらったリターン・トゥ・フォーエヴァーのリユニオン・ツアーに始まり、その後もチック・コリア、スタンリー・クラークとのトリオ・ツアー、更にスタンリーと上原ひろみのトリオまで、ここ最近のレニー・ホワイトは非常に活発な動きを見せ続けていました。

そして、次に彼が着手したのが、自らのリーダー作品となりました。前作は遡ること1999年の『Edge』である為、なんと10年越えの新作という事になります。

ここで彼が挑んだのは「ロック」。しかしただのロックではありません。プロデューサーとしてもこれまで多彩な仕掛けを行ってきた彼です。ハードなサウンドの中にも複雑なリズム、そしてファンク・エッセンスを随所に仕掛けた、いわばレニー・ホワイト流ジャズ・ロックと言えるでしょう。

そのポイントは、まずはレニーが打ち出すリズム、そしてギターです。ニック・モロック、デイヴィッド・ギルモアなど5人のギタリストをふんだんい使い、ハードなサウンドを作り上げています。

そんなギター・サウンドの中で、ジョージ・コリガン、ヴァーナード・ライト、ドナルド・ブラックマン、ヴィンス・エヴァンスら鍵盤陣がファンキーな味付けを加える役割。

そしてベースは盟友スタンリー・クラーク、ヴィクター・ベイリーがレニーと共に躍動するリズムを作り上げています。

ソウルフルなヴォーカル曲も2曲、更にレニーとマイク・クラーク(ヘッドハンターズ)とのドラム・デュエットなど、まさに聴き所満載のアルバムです。

現在60歳である、レニーが叩き出す渾身のリズム。ジェフ・ベックも凄いですがレニーも負けていません。この作品で、多くのドラマーが刺激を受ける事は間違いないはずです。
