2013 two CD collection. At first glance, Youssou N'Dour was an unlikely poster boy for Africa when world music first reared it's head back in the late 1980s. Although there was no doubting his popularity at home, when compared to others in Africa, Senegalese music was a minority taste. But Youssou did rise to the top and along with artists such as Miriam Makeba, Manu Dibango, Hugh Masekela and Fela Kuti, is one of the very few African artists whose names have household recognition in the English-speaking world today. These CDs chart that rise; from some of his first recordings as a young but equal member of Senegal's hottest band, Etoile de Dakar, to the Super Etoile group that arose from it's ashes, and on to becoming the acknowledged leader of it's successor, the confusingly-named Super Etoile de Dakar and Youssou's platform for international success.
