Product Description

Tony Gilkyson is a genuine product of California's country, rock and folk music scenes. Born in Hollywood and raised in an environment of songwriters and musicians, Tony got his start as a boy recording with his father, Walt Disney composer (Jungle Book's 'Bare Necessities') and prominent folk singer/songwriter Terry Gilkyson. Until now, Tony's own reputation as a songwriter has been outstripped by his impressive career as a top flight sideman and session player. Gilkyson is most recognized for his gutsy guitar playing with the legendary Los Angeles bands X and Lone Justice. He joined X with the acclaimed album See How We Are, continuing for 10 years, through the all acoustic live recording, X Unclogged. in addition to Lone Justice, other artists he has added his imaginative guitar sounds to both live and recorded include: Sam Phillips, Duke McVinnie, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Peter Rowan, Larry Hosford and Dave Alvin. During his time with X, he also started producing other's recordings, including fellow X-mate Exene Cervenka's two solo albums, sister Eliza Gilkyson, Dances with Wolves' author and poet Michael Blake, and co-producing with Tom Waits, Chuck E. Weiss' Extremely Cool album (Weiss has included several of Tony's original songs on his last two releases). Since leaving X in 1996, Tony has played guitar with Kip Boardman, Alice Cooper, Bob Dylan, Mike Stinson, Randy Weeks & Kathleen Wilhoite. He also got more into producing, working again with Weiss and producing his 2001 album Old Souls and Wolf Tickets. in 2003, he produced Eleni Mandell's acclaimed Country for True Lovers. He's also played guitar on numerous soundtracks, including the recent Johnny Cash biopic Walk the Line, Don' t Come Knockin' and All the Kings Men with noted producer T Bone Burnett. Tony's first solo recording, Sparko was released in 1998. Gilkyson puts the focus on the songwriting with the release of Goodbye Guitar, a new collection of earthy folk and country-roots songs on Rolling Sea Records. The new CD is produced by Charlie McGovern and Don Heffington. The album features musical contributions from friends and family including: Don Heffington, Van Dyke Parks, Eliza Gilkyson, Danny McGough and Chuck E. Weiss. Standard Jewel Case. Rolling Sea. 2006.
