Product Description

El Rey is the 2008 album from indie-rock veterans The Wedding Present, their first studio album since Take Fountain, released in 2005. This is the first collaboration with the legendary Albini since the renowned Seamonsters in 1991. The band returned from an eight-year hiatus in early 2005 with the release of Take Fountain which brought them back into the spotlight with all the style and sophistication associated with a legendary group, but fans were pleased to see the band had lost none of the growling angst with which they had burst onto the scene with their 1985 debut, George Best. El Rey was written while David Gedge was living in LA and it burns with West Coast sunlight; Tinsel Town seen through the eyes of a gritty Northerner. The band line-up is David Gedge (guitar & vocals), Terry de Castro (bass), Graeme Ramsay (drums), and Chris McConville (guitar).

謹んで聴かせて頂いたが、やはりJosef K直系のサウンドでU2を凌ぐ人気のあった頃の作品の方がいいと思います。守旧派、旧世代の繰言なのであまり怒らないでください。同じ傾向のバンドにNew FADSの名前を見つけて懐かしく思ってしまう世代なので。

それまでの枠組みから解き放たれた様な風通しの良さが’04年以降のTWPの作品には顕われている。しかもデビュー時から積み上げてきた表現の本質に一分のブレも無い。サウンド的にギター・オリエンテッドであってもCINERAMAを経由した確かな進化形が示されている。TAKE FOUNTAIN、そして今作という傑作を作り果せたからこそ今のTWPは全方位に開かれた屈強のライヴアクトになったのだ。そんなTWPの活躍の場を狭め、作品に対する正当な評価の妨げとなっているのは、旧時代の偏った見方をに引きずり続ける一部古株ファンのイメージの押しつけに他ならぬ。

やはり別格であった。デイヴィッド・ゲッジの作る作品に外れ無し。改めて、シネラマで彼の作る曲や詞の本質は大きく変容したのだという事も、そして今の時代のバンドとしてタフに生き残っている理由もよく分かった。2008年最高のアルバム『El Rey』に光を！そしてこれを歓迎し、楽しむあなたには心からの祝福を。
