Limited twelve CD box set. The Complete Collection of Song and Spiritual Albums begins with Leontyne Price's first recording from 1954 as part of Columbia's American Music series: The Hermit Songs by Samuel Barber, with the composer at the piano. The song recital albums which follow, demonstrate Price's wide range of repertoire, including French and German works. From 1961 to 1970 Price recorded three albums of Spirituals, which are also included in this set, as well as her musical album Right as the Rain, recorded in 1967 with Andr Previn.

黒人ソプラノ歌手、レオンティーン・プライスが歌うクラシック歌曲と黒人霊歌を集成した12枚組ボックス・セット。 CD1からCD8までがクラシックの歌曲集で、CD9～CD11が黒人としての確信に満ちた歌声と聖歌隊による黒人霊歌(スピリチュアル)集。CD12は、ピアノ・トリオをバックにしたミュージカル・ナンバー集だ。ちなみに、オリジナル・アルバム名は、CD9が”Swing Low, Sweet Chariot”、CD10が”My Favourite Hymns”、CD11が”I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be Free”、CD12が”Right as the Rain”。クラシックも良いが、CD9からCD11の自家薬籠中の黒人霊歌集はさらに素晴らしい。CD12のアンドレ・プレヴィン（p）、シェリー・マン（ds）、レイ・ブラウン（b）をバックに、ジャズ風の伴奏で歌うプライスは最高。プレヴィンさん、昔からいい仕事してますね。

オペラと両方出ているのだから２つとも買えばいいのに、この歌曲＆黒人霊歌だけにした。オペラの方はカラヤンソプラノとして全曲ものあり、まあカラヤンはともかくプライスを聴くには十分。何枚か米国録音の「名アリア集」を買ったが、彼女はとまれオケが無味乾燥の上に、必要以上の盛り上がりを作ろうとあがき、数枚あったはずのＬＰの行方は遥として知れない。それに比べるとこちらの黒人霊歌は、自家薬籠の共演者らが厚くガードを固めていて万全。それにプレヴィンとのライト・アズ・ザ・レインが最高。プレヴィンが本当に仕事をしたと言える最高傑作。まあその他歌曲はおまけとしましょう。
