Offered together for the first time, this new SACD re-mastering from Praga features historic recordings of three acclaimed concertos by Dmitri Shostakovich, performed by the soloists who made them famous - as dedicatees and as performers. David Oistrakh is heard in the first Violin Concerto, the earliest work of the trio, dating from 1947. Mstislav Rostropovich, backed by Eugene Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra, is soloist in the lyrical first Cello Concerto. The album's centerpiece is a performance of the uncharacteristically lighthearted second Piano Concerto featuring Leonard Bernstein as soloist, conducting the New York Philharmonic from the keyboard.
