Few pianists have explored and recorded such a wealth of keyboard literature as Vladimir Ashkenazy. During an association with Decca which stretches back almost 40 years now, Ashkenazy has completed cycles of some of the most important concertos (Mozart, Beethoven, Prokofiev, Bartk and Rachmaninov), as well as an extensive amount of solo literature. Two of the greatest figures in 19th-century piano music are Chopin and Schumann, and music by both composers has featured, and continues to feature, in Ashkenazy's recitals. He has recorded almost all of Chopin solo works and during the years 1984-95 undertook a major survey of Schumann's solo literature (some works including the Sinfonische Etden, Fantasie, Kreisleriana and Humoreske) Ashkenazy had recorded earlier in his career). These digital recordings are now presented as a box set for the first time and are an invaluable collection of the composer's most important keyboard works, performed by one of the greatest pianists of his generation.

いつもは控えめな評価をする私も、このアルバムには遠慮なく星５つをつけたいと思います。アシュケナージがラフマニノフの次に得意とするのは、このシューマンではないでしょうか？偏りのない表現で名曲から小さな曲まで網羅しているのはもちろん、謝肉祭や森の情景、子どもの情景などでの首尾一貫した音楽性は、まさにアシュケナージならではのものと言えるでしょう。早めのテンポが、いかにもシューマンらしい躍動感を生み出して、その音楽を魅力的なものとしている、すばらしい演奏です。

アシュケナージはメランコリックなシューマンのイメージの中に無限で普遍的なものを見、これら本来は『見えないもの』を『見えるもの』とした。言い替えれば、ここでの演奏は『見えるもの』と『見えないもの』との接点であり、交錯する内面の世界を平明にしてくれた。これはショパン全集にも共通したヴィジョンがあり、質量共に揃っている。但しベト、モー、ショスタコはご遠慮したい。

アシュケナージのシューマンは最高！。彼独特の艶のある透明なピアノの音色にのって、シューマン独特のファンタジーの世界が広がっていく。けっして大上段にかまえることなく、自然なタッチのもとに歌うシューマンの世界は、他のピアニストではけっして得られない独特の世界。リスニングルームがシューマンの世界で満たされて、えもいわれぬ夢幻の世界へと誘ってくれる。デッカの録音も優秀。しかも、価格もリーズナブルときている。ここには、間違いなく最高のシューマンがある。
