Schubert's last great chamber work, his String Quartet in C of 1828, remained unperformed and unpublished for at least twenty years after his death. It is now regarded as one of the pinnacles of chamber music, and seen by performers as one of the great challenges to their artistry. It's writing shows the composer in a light-hearted mood, successfully combining weight, profundity, melodic charm with breathtaking technical assurance. On this recording the Kuss Quartet are joined by cellist Mikl's Pernyi.

アルカント四重奏団がこの曲を録音した時、こういうスタイルになるとイメージしたのだけれど、ピリオド風であるとともに意外にも｢古風に｣ロマンティックな演奏で、予想とは違っていた。そうしたら、クス四重奏団が彼らのお株を奪って、イメージ通りの演奏をやってしまった。まるでバルトークか現代音楽のような精妙な作りで、第2楽章主部の旋律などもロマンティックな歌ではなく、繊細な手つきでヴェールを一枚一枚、紡いでゆくようなデリケートな演奏。一方、スケルツォの主部や終楽章では一転してリズミックな推進力を見せる。まさしく新世代のシューベルトといった感じだが、第2チェロのペレーニも完全に四重奏団のスタイルに同化している。
